"Step Right Up"
by Gerald Trump

Do you ever get that feeling? That one in the pit of your stomach that's
yelling, "What should I do now?"

With all the new Internet Marketing Gurus out there bombarding us with their "My tricks are better than anyone else's" and the "Just buy my program and you'll get rich" pitches, it's enough to make a normal person feel like they're going to the carnival for the first time. The "Carnies" pitched their pitch, and gave us that feeling of anticipation, as we were about to step into the world of fantastical new wonders. At the same time we felt that fear of the unknown turning our stomach upside down. The two bits our parents begrudgingly coughed up, was completely immaterial. Not until after we actually saw the two-headed snake, The Wild man, the alien, and the Unicorn, did we realize that we should have opted for a carameled apple and some cotton candy instead.

Although I have been in Marketing and Advertising for nearly 25 years, it doesn't mean that I have come up with a new approach, or any new ideas to make you rich. Far from it. However, It seems embarrassing to admit that I just realized something very basic. It was something that I learned from a wise art teacher years before I got out of College. It had nothing to do with Marketing, and something that I hadn't realized until now, is the answer to keeping me on the right track. I am passing it along, just in case it might be of benefit to a few of you. Before I do, however, I need to give these "Marketeers" their due.

Whether or not these guys have really figured it out on their own, or simply are borrowing from each other, much of the information they provide to the unknowledgeable Internet marketer, is pretty helpful. Tips on how to use Internet tools, such as free ezine ads, or getting good search engine placement, as an example, can be very helpful. You can learn a great amount of technical tips as there are a myriad of ezines, list marketers, FFA hosts, etc. that these guys have all come to know quite intimately. And for this information, they are a good source. Nearly every bit of which, can be found for free, or at least very inexpensively. But their real marketing success comes from convincing the rest of us that their "secret" is different, better, and ultimately the greatest moneymaker the world has ever known, just might be true. And they are relentless in their pursuit of staying in front of you until you have a moment of weakness, and in desperation, buy their information.

They have the ideal product-- Information. That's it. No cost, no inventory, no investment. But because there are so many of them, we can actually become paralyzed and disenchanted with this whole Internet marketing thing. Let us not despair.

Here's what my art teacher told me one day while critiquing one of my paintings. He could tell that I obviously was second-guessing myself, and a bit lost in my pursuit of becoming a great artist. "Listen to everyone" he said. "And thank them for their advice. Then, find three people who you trust, admire, and are undisputed experts in your eyes. These people need to know you, your work, and have no agenda in telling you what they think. Listen to everyone, but consider only what these three people have to say. And always make your own decisions."
25 years later, I have made a realization. Of all the advice that I have received, this was the best. Not only for my art. But for my life. So... I still listen to the "Carnies." I choose the ones that I come to know and trust. I consider their advice. And then I try to find the courage to
make my own decisions.
