MAKING YOUR GOALS A REALITY
By: Tom and Kimberly Goodwin of www.4achievement.com

Here we are at the beginning of a new year and a new millennium. A clean slate lies before us. This time of year, more than any other, our thoughts turn to the possibility that planting the seeds of change will reap a bumper crop of achievement. Unfortunately for most of us by April the crop has withered and died due to neglect.

Commitment is important, but without a plan even the most determined people can lose focus. Farmers do not just throw seeds in a field and hope for the best. They follow specific timetables and strive for pre-set quotas. Here are some tips to help keep you plowing on the straight and narrow when it comes to your goals and resolutions.

1. Put a number on it.
Vague resolutions are weak resolutions. Losing weight is not a goal, it is a desire. Losing 25 pounds is a goal. Be specific. You may want to make more money this year, but finding loose change in the couch is probably not what you had in mind.

2. Create a timetable.
Deadlines are both a call to action and a schedule for success. If your have set a goal of losing 20 pounds by July, you know that losing 5 pounds a month will get you there. If you want to save a certain amount of money by the end of the year, you have to put away so much every month to achieve success.

Short term goals also help you avoid being discouraged. Running a marathon may seem to be beyond your capability; 26 miles is a long way. Five miles however, may be doable. Once you can do five, you go for ten. When you can run ten  miles, you shoot for 15. From there it is only 11 more miles to your goal. That doe not seem so difficult.

3. Do not bite off more than you can chew.
Change can be tough enough as it is, even without there being way too much of it at once. Rome was not built in a day, nor could it be remodeled in one. Each person has their own individual tolerance level when it comes to experiencing change in their lives. Some people actually enjoy a certain amount. Only you know what you will be comfortable with. You may want to start the year with just a couple of major goals. If you reach those, OK, go on to others.Too many changes in your life may dampen your enthusiasm. Just do not try to take on too much right at the get go.

4. Be realistic, but not too realistic.
This can be a tough one. You do not want your goals to be so far fetched as to seem unreachable. However, a lot can be said for lofty goals. Kennedy’s goal to reach the moon by the end of the decade must have been thought impossible by many, but as you know, the deadline was met with room to spare. In the end, only you can decide how high to set your sights. Again, you may want to start off slow, you can always pick up the pace once you get going.

5. Redefine commitment.
Obviously, commitment is a necessary ingredient in any successful plan. The trick is not to let it narrow your focus so much that you lose sight of the big picture. Commitment must be strong, but flexible. After all, your goals are merely destinations. How you get there is not nearly as important as getting there. If you run into a wall, your commitment need never waiver. An adjustment of course may be all that is needed to bypass an obstacle, and remain committed to your goal.

I hope these pointers will help put your goals and resolutions more easily within your grasp. Good luck, and have a great rest of the year!

Warmly,
Kimberly and Tom Goodwin
